UNPLUGGED- Addressing Compulsive Behaviours & Promoting Healthy Digital Habits

January 2026
Published

UNPLUGGED is a digital awareness project developed within Pangea Youth, responding to the increasing impact of screen dependency and digital overload in young people’s lives. The project emerged from a shared concern among youth workers, educators, and mental health professionals about the psychological and social effects of rapid digitalisation.

The foundations of UNPLUGGED were shaped during the early stages of the project in Bușteni, Romania, through close collaboration with international partners and coordinators. From the outset, the project was designed as a reflective, practice-oriented response to a real and growing need in youth work and education.

Overview

Rationale

As digital technologies become more embedded in everyday life, young people face increasing challenges related to attention, emotional regulation, social connection, and well-being. UNPLUGGED approaches digital awareness not as a matter of restriction, but as a process of developing conscious, balanced, and psychologically informed relationships with digital environments.

The project is grounded in the belief that youth workers and educators have a key role in supporting young people to navigate digital life with awareness, resilience, and agency.

Details

Project Approach

UNPLUGGED is built on an interdisciplinary and collaborative framework. The project brings together a strong team of psychologists, medical educators, psychological counsellors, and youth workers who work collectively to explore digital well-being from a psychological and educational perspective.

Rather than relying on one single method, UNPLUGGED adopts a holistic approach that combines theory, reflection, and experiential learning.

Methods & Tools

The project uses a range of experiential and reflective methods, including:

Psychoeducation

Psychodrama techniques

Mentoring and peer learning

Art-based approaches and creative expression

Storytelling and narrative practices

These tools are used to create safe learning spaces where participants can explore their digital habits, reflect on their experiences, and develop greater awareness of how digital environments affect their well-being.

Target Group

Young people

Youth workers and educators

Schools and educational institutions interested in digital well-being

Impact & Vision

UNPLUGGED aims to contribute to the development of healthier digital habits, increased psychological awareness, and stronger reflective skills among young people. At the same time, it supports youth workers and educators by offering them practical tools and frameworks to address digital well-being in their own contexts.

The project is envisioned as a collaborative journey, where learning, reflection, and action come together to promote sustainable digital awareness.

Collaboration & Participation

Schools and educational institutions are invited to take part in the UNPLUGGED trainings free of charge and to become part of a wider learning journey focused on digital awareness and youth well-being.
